Seduction

I admit it; I am easily seduced by plants.

A colorful and highly fragrant nursery display plays on my weakness.

On Friday I was in the thrall of spring promises. The day was sunny and warm. When I went to the grocery and garden center, it didn't take much to draw me to a display of bedding plants instead of the aisles of food.

Tossing my grocery shopping list aside, I found myself filling my cart with tomato plants, cilantro, lettuce, pansies and violas. Allyssum perfumed inside my car as I hurried home, eager to grab a trowel and create my garden bed tapestry.

Earlier in the day I had seen the blue iris flags parading about in my backyard garden.

I tried to resist surrendering to what they suggested to my soul:

Spring is here...now is the moment...give in! The soil is rich and loamy; the sunshine warm and welcoming.

In the back of my mind I heard the voice of reason reminding me that it was still winter for another day.

Phfff my heart replied. Carp Diem! You will find the gardening to be sweet... come, plant and enjoy!

No wonder I gave in so easily to the siren call of the plants in the garden center!

By the time I arrived back home, unloaded my floral treasures and located my trowel...
Winter had returned to prove to me my folly.
My neighbors peeked out their windows, wondering why I was gardening in falling snow.

The springing March hare had led me on.
Crazy rabbit!
Silly me!

The tulips, daffodils, iris and hyacinth are steadily inching up, pacing themselves for a true spring time arrival.

Be patient, they whisper. Be patient and wait for us. Our blossoms will arrive in due season.

Be prepared to welcome us when we arrive!

(Meanwhile, Missy continues to hope for a welcome of his/her own.
There is no greeting written on our backdoor floor mat.
I'm willing to offer a pat and some chat, but no, I really don't need another cat.
You are welcome to visit my garden Missy, but I know for a fact that you belong to another home.
I will not be seduced by you too!)

It won't be too much longer I think! Beautiful colors. I like your shorter hair too.

With a title like that...I wasn't sure where your Sunday post was going! Whew.

I can totally understand your eagerness to garden...despite the weather.

Oh, such pretty colors! I really miss being able to grow irises...my favorite flower.

Now that my early azalea is in bloom, I informed Doc that we need to do the bedding plant shopping! He brought up the not-so-fun stuff, like mulch and weeds and so on... Spoilsport!

Aw... too bad about the snow ... I keep wondering if we will be surprised by it too yet. These sunny days and spring growth peeking through does throw us off and fool us. So nice to esperience the seasons, though.

When I visited the bonsai garden in Boston, the head gardener assured me that he will not be seduced by the warmth and sunshine. He said he has danced with that lady many times before, and it always ends with a broken heart...and a mad scramble to cover even the hardy specimens. But the maples didn't know it. They were budding like crazy in the greenhouses. Just few more weeks my love.
