There's been a squirrel dray up in our sequoia tree.
We pretty much just ignored it, and let Larry the Cable Squirrel's family just do whatever it is that squirrels do in their dreys.
They have left the bird feeders alone, and we have from time to time left a peanut or two out for a treat for anyone who might be interested.
Peanut shells began to rain down on his head...
and all over the yard.
He looked up to see what had caused the ruckus.
The dray had tumbled down from it's place 3/4 of the way up the tree, down to a lower branch.
We don't think the squirrels were in the nest at the time.
This morning one squirrel was diligently tearing up grass, shoving the blades into his mouth, and then was leaping around various trees in the yard.
I guess he intends to start construction on a new dray today.
The fallen dray was a combination of dried grasses and fur...the softest looking mess I could imagine.
I know that squirrels regularly build new drays when old drays get tatty, so this was probably no big loss.
But looking at all the peanut shells scattered about our garden, I can't help but wonder how many times Mama Squirrel must have nagged those squirrel children to stop leaving peanut shells in their rooms.
And to take out the trash NOW!
She probably even said "I'm not going to tell you again...."
And with this event, she probably regrets that she didn't make her squirrelly kids mind her the first time she told them to clean up the place.

I was thinking about how interesting your new home is. . .and how you enjoy the outside of it so much. Perhaps the climate makes a difference.
It sounds like you are camping. . in the most beautiful little home with a view.
If you didn't have to work .. it could be the loveliest daily vacation.
Kids. They'll never learn. Parents will forever be nagging them.
How funny! That dray is of a completely different construction than the ones around here. I never thought about them keeping their trash inside. I guess the shells got too heavy.
